“Can I ask you something?” Jarod asked, now with his full attention on her.  Standing this close to him, in her bare feet, their height difference was so evident, almost a foot. 

“What do you see in Lowell?”  

She looked at his straight on blue gaze and suddenly the room felt small. 

“Just tell me, is that what you want?  I’m sorry.  I’m just curious.” He stepped away from her, running his hands over his face, he’d taken a deep breath before turning back to face her.  “From the outside looking in, I don’t like him with you.  He isn’t right for you.”

She should have known he would turn this cordial meal into anything but.  Raising her head praying for strength and knowing even if it was to come from above she would never wait for it.

“How the fuck do you know who is and isn’t right for me?” her breasts heaved from the seething shout. Breaking the distance, she poked his chest again with her index finger emphasizing every word, “you’ve reappeared in my life what three days ago and all of a sudden you are an expert on what and who is best for me?”

Grabbing her finger with a gentle hand, he tried to stay calm, but whenever he is around her fury just explodes out of him, “I don’t like him with you!”

She laughed a malicious laugh, but didn’t move, “and why the fuck not?”

“Because he isn’t me! Alright?” he shouted.

“What?”

“You damn well heard me,” he said softer, but closer to her.  Their bodies touched on every line.  “You are just as much affected by me as I am by you.  Admit it.”

“You are fucking insane, that is what you are.” She pulled away, taking refuge over by her workstation.

“Are you denying it?”

           Chill bumps spread like a fierce wildfire across the surface of my skin. I couldn’t tell if Ben noticed or not. I hoped that he didn’t. He leaned slightly to his left and deposited his coffee cup onto an end table. Then it was his turn to break our intense silence, and boy, he didn’t just break the silence, he shattered it into a million pieces along with my stupid ploy and formerly bolstered, but newly absent, courage. Apparently, once Ben spoke, my smart-mouthed inner Kat disappeared in a hurry. His voice came out low and rough; each syllable that rolled off his tongue seemed to stroke me internally, causing my stomach to flip and flutter wildly.

            “Kathleen, am I the one to thank for these chill bumps, all over your skin or did something else do this for you?” As he spoke to me, he lifted his right hand and lightly brushed the backs of his long fingers down my right upper arm then swirled a light circle around my elbow and continued down the sensitive inner skin of my forearm, skating across my flesh with barely-there strokes from his nimble fingers.

             I kept my eyes cast away from his. I seemed incapable of looking directly into his eyes. I felt as if looking straight into those glowing depths of vivid blue would cause me to be swallowed up whole and pulled beneath the surface to blissfully drown in him. The fierce sexual energy that permeated the air around Ben made it difficult to breathe, and it intimidated me.  I chose not to answer him. Or perhaps I couldn’t answer him. 

            “Kathleen, look at me.” His commanding tone and presence was hard to challenge even from a distance and far more grueling a task within such close quarters. I could smell him, I could feel the warmth from his body radiating outward, and I could clearly hear each breath he drew from the space between us and pulled down to fill his lungs. I felt a powerful crimson, heated blush roll through my veins. It coursed throughout my body leaving evidence of my arousal in its wake. My skin heated, and my neck and cheeks flushed into a hot red. I realized that I was helplessly adrift in a sea of desire and arousal and that battling the current would be useless. I could either embrace the journey along the formidable pull of the current, or I could fight in vain against Mother Nature, knowing that undoubtedly I would lose. 

            “Look at me. Answer my question.” I lifted my eyes from the floor, but still avoided his stare. 

            He extended his long index finger and placed the pad of it beneath my chin and encouraged my head to tilt back, forcing my eyes to meet his. The moment we locked eyes, my breathing halted , and I felt my stomach flip and flutter all over again with a heightened need that exceeded any feeling I had experienced before it, ever. I battled against myself for composure so that I could finally answer him. I had not the faintest idea of what I would say, but I knew I needed to say something. My eyes darted around a bit, and he released my jaw, giving me an opportunity to speak. 

            Tit for tat, I thought. 

            “You never answered my own question, Mr. Chase.” I made a point to emphasize his name in hopes that sounding more like his employee would bring a halt to his request for an answer. I was hoping we could end this torturous little tango that had me tied up in knots.

             No, Kat. You wish Ben had you tied up. He hasn’t done it yet. 

            And with that sarcastic little jab to my sex life (or lack thereof), the inner Kat sauntered back into my head as if she had merely stepped away for a moment, but didn’t go too far.

Katrin Svenson after being nearly attacked by her drunk of an ex-fiancé was whisked out of town to a new place with a new job to start over. Her family arranged for her to have a place to hide from Wade so that she would be safe. They asked a friend of the family who happened to be traveling that way to give her a ride and to check in on her from time to time. Erik was the poster man for no commitments and "no white picket fences". Neither of these two were in the mind set to meet their soul mate. As fate would have it from the moment they shook hands their was a spark between the two that could not be doubted. It was comical to read their point of views as the book progressed, taking in how each of them saw each encounter. The story was written extremely well and left the reader turning page after page. As Erik and Katrin spent time together talking and sharing important details of their lives it became hard for either to fight what they were feeling both trying to convince themselves they were better suited as friends.

Katrin and Erik's feelings came to a crash when Katrin comes down with Scarlet Fever and Erik, even being reminded of his painful past of losing his mother without the support of his father, opened his heart to her. There is so much more to this story and I will not spoil it all! I suggest you add this book to your must reads! I am giving it four stars!!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Traffic Jam. Melissa Groeling did an amazing job with keeping the reader suspended. The story has a plot that unwinds and keeps you guessing. I really connected with Val and wanted to yell at her sister through my Kindle! The story covers high school drama, sex trafficking, and how secrets can destroy a family. The family bonds together and leaves you with a feeling that the family will heal. The book also includes a side romance with Val and her sister's friend John.  Although Melissa has written this story as a stand alone... I am desperately wishing for more of Val and John!
